Anti-bullying strategy

The Education and Leadership Trust is a multi-academy trust (MAT) incorporating three schools driven by co-operative values in the City of Manchester. The schools are Whalley Range 11-18 High School, Levenshulme High School and The East Manchester Academy.

At first glance, the ELT do not appear to have a lot of material on anti-bullying, but in reality this is because their ethos on safeguarding, e-safety and anti-bullying is ingrained throughout their school and VLEs.

Kate Wragg, Head of ICT

At first glance, the ELT do not appear to have a lot of material on anti-bullying, but in reality this is because their ethos on safeguarding, e-safety and anti-bullying is ingrained throughout their school and VLEs.

Kate Wragg explains: "we have a shared strategy across our schools covering all aspects of safeguarding, even if the processes maybe be different".

Reporting bullying

Kate manages Frog in both Levenshulme and Whalley Range and has tried out different elements on each platform.  On Whalley Range's student dashboard, the second button on the home page is 'Report a bullying incident' which takes students through to a form which emails the heads of house.

Both schools have teams of student Anti-Bullying Ambassadors who Kate trusts to manage the FrogLearn sites.  Kate points out that the ethos in the schools means students don't view this as snitching:

"There's a real sense of sharing, not hiding...our kids view it simply as the right thing to do."

eSafety

Part of the reason this sense of solidarity is embedded may be because ELT don't just focus on bullying, but view safeguarding and eSafety as important aspects of school life.  Kate and her team noticed that an e-Safety site created as a one-off for a Focus day still regularly attracts visits from students.

"I think we had 20,000 visits to the site last year.  Students were never directed to it, but they are interested in learning how to stay safe online."

In the curriculum

While most of the ELT's anti-bullying focus has been on offering students reporting & information, the first module for Year 7 ICT students is based around staying safe online, including recognising and dealing with cyber-bullying.

Anti bullying Week 2016 is being held between the 14th and 18th November with the theme 'power for good' and is organised by Anti-Bullying Alliance.

  • A survey of 253,755 children and young people in England in years 6, 8 and 10 (ages 10-11, 12-13, 14-15 respectively) found bullying to be widespread:
  • 25% of children and young people said they worried about bullying
  • 46% of children and young people said they had been bullied at some point whilst at school
  • Of those who have been bullied at some point, 29% had been bullied in the last year  TellUs4, Ofsted, 2010

How Frog can help

We have an Anti-Bullying site available for you to download from the FrogStore

Search for "bullying" and look for this logo:

  • You could also consider retasking the Acceptable Use Policy in System Preferences to have your students agree to an anti-bullying pledge.
  • Like Whalley Range, you can set up Bully Reporting forms in Frog which can send emails to your staff.
  • Sometimes students just need a space to share their worries - a forum widget can give them that opportunity.
